Weathered Elm Footstool

Low, worn and entirely without pretension.

Elm gone silver grey from use, the grain raised where the soft wood wore away and the hard grain stayed. Four splayed legs, pegged through with a stretcher between, the whole thing a little out of square the way handmade things are. The top carries marks from a life you will never know about. Splits, a scorch, a dent. None of it a flaw.

At under nine inches high it is a footstool, a plant stand, a step for a child, a surface beside a low chair for a cup and a book. Put it where it will get used rather than looked at. It has survived everything so far.
