A small chesterfield in leather the color of old tobacco, worn soft by years of being sat in.
The back is buttoned deep in diamond tufting and rolls out into scrolled arms that sit level with it, the true chesterfield line. Brass nailheads trace the curl of each arm and run along the front rail. Two loose seat cushions in a paler, crackled leather sit on four dark tapered legs.
The leather is the whole story. Deep chocolate across the back and arms, mottled to honey where hands have rested, crazed fine as old map lines across the top of the back and the cushions. Cool under your hand at first, then warm.
Two people, close. A book, a glass of something, the evening going long. It is small enough for a reading corner or the foot of a bed, and it holds its own in a room without asking for anything to match it.
