A Ralph Lauren abstract rug in smoky olive and deep umber, its colour smudged in long horizontal sweeps like a landscape seen through rain. Edges melt into one another. Nothing is drawn, everything is suggested.

The pile is plush and silken, and it moves with the light. Walk across it and the colour shifts under your feet, darker one way, paler the other, the way velvet answers a hand. Low sun turns the khaki to soft gold and the umber to something close to black. No border, no fringe, just a quiet bound edge, so the painting runs right to the floor.
