The Dark Sweep
One black gesture, carried all the way across.
The stroke enters at the left and turns through the middle of the canvas in a single unbroken move, heavy with paint, blunt at the start and tapering where the hand lifted. Along its upper edge a blush of mauve rises out of the black, the way a bruise warms at its border. Around it the ground stays open: bare white, a patch of cream, a drift of soft grey blue holding the corner.
There is nothing tentative here. The painting was finished in the time the stroke took, and it still carries that speed. Set it where the eye lands on entering, against plaster or lime wash, and let the white around it do the breathing.
Painted by Leah Mendelson.
