Soft Banding

Layers laid down in long horizontal passes, like light settling on a wall through the afternoon.

Butter yellow at the top, rose through the middle, a run of black low on the canvas, and white worked through all of it. The strokes are broad and roughly parallel, built up wet into wet so the colours stay separate at the edges and go soft where they meet. The surface is thick enough to throw its own small shadows in raking light.

This one is built on a deep canvas, an inch and a half at the edge, twice the depth of the others. It stands proud of the wall and needs no frame. Hang it alone and let the shadow it casts be part of the piece.

Painted by Leah Mendelson.
