Antique Chinese Hand-Painted Sideboard

An antique sideboard carrying the hand of the person who painted it, ink florals and calligraphy that have watched over a hundred years of rooms before this one.

The long top runs low and level over a case fitted with six drawers, two long drawers inscribed with Chinese characters, and a central pair of cabinet doors each painted with its own vase of flowering branches. To either side, fixed panels hold oval medallions of ink peonies and plum blossom, brushed by hand rather than printed. Aged brass ring pulls and a vertical brass plate mark where hands have opened it for generations. A scalloped apron runs the full width, and the piece stands on straight legs joined low by a stretcher, built the way real cabinetry was built.

Set it long against a dining wall or behind a sofa and let it hold what a home actually uses, platters and linens behind the doors, the everyday things sorted into the drawers. The wood has darkened and scuffed the way genuine age does, worn pale at the edges where hands have rested, the calligraphy softened but never lost. Nothing about it was made to look old. It simply is.
