Antique Pine Trunk

Long, low, and entirely itself. A 19th century European pine trunk that has been somewhere, and shows it.

The pine has gone dry and grey-tan with age, the grain standing open where decades of handling wore the softness away. Two hand-forged iron straps cross the front and fold over the lid, each one shaped by hammer rather than machine, and beside them flat iron plates hold keyholes worn down to dark slots. Run your palm along the top and you find the whole history of it. Worm holes clustered along the front rail. A hairline split that opened once and stayed. An amber knot risen up through the boards like sap remembering. Iron drop handles at each end, hanging a little crooked, the way things hang when they have actually been carried.

At 16 inches it lands exactly at coffee table height, which is the easiest way to live with it. Set it in front of your sofa and it becomes the low center of the room, a surface for your books and a bowl and a cup going cold while you stay longer than you meant to. At the foot of your bed it turns into a bench, somewhere to sit while you pull your shoes off. In an entry it takes boots and bags without asking to be treated gently. Nothing you set down will hurt it, and that is the quiet pleasure of a piece that arrived already worn.

Keep it simple on top. One vessel, one bowl, a great deal of empty wood. This is a piece that wants space around it, not styling.

Care is close to nothing. Dust it dry, keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators so the boards stay stable, and let a damp cloth handle anything that spills. Do not oil it or seal it. The dryness is the whole character.
