Small and low, dark iron gone soft with rust and time. A quiet little altar of a table, the kind you set beside a chair and never move again.
The top is a true antique cast-iron heating grate, salvaged from an old house and set like a panel into a hand-welded iron frame with a raised lip. Look closely and the ironwork tells on itself, the bloom of rust, the pattern worn thin in places and still holding. One design wears an ornate floral scroll, all curling vines and openwork. The other a tight geometric lattice, small squares and diamonds locking across the surface. Each is one of a kind, because the grate that makes it only ever existed once.
Slim square legs lift it just off the floor, so it reads light despite the weight of the iron. Low enough to live beside a chair or a bed, small enough to slip into the corner that always wanted something. Set a small stack of books and a ceramic cup down on it, and let the late light rake across the openwork and throw its pattern onto the floor.
This is iron that has already lived one long life and is only deepening into another. The rust is not a flaw, it is the record. Nothing here will scratch or date. It has been through worse and come out more itself.
Put it where you pass it every day. It settles in low and quiet, as though it was pulled from the bones of the house and had simply always been there.
