One of a kind. Hand-carved hardwood, South India, approximately 17th century.

This is not furniture. It is a piece of architecture that outlived the building it was born into. Carved by hand in South India roughly four hundred years ago, a fragment of something sacred, salvaged and set down into a second life. An altar. A mantel piece. A single dark object that holds a whole room together.

The face runs edge to edge with hand-cut scrollwork, wave folding over wave, volutes curling into themselves and rimmed in fine beading, anchored at either end by dense granular blocks. Nothing here was pressed or poured. Every curl was cut by hand, generations ago, and the centuries have darkened the wood to the color of old iron and worn its edges soft. Under your hand it feels cool and solid and deeply lived in, a patina no finish could ever fake.

Low and long and small enough to live almost anywhere. Rest it along a mantel, a console, the top of a low shelf, a dark horizontal line against the wall. Leave it bare and let the carving speak, or let it hold a single stoneware vessel, a few dried branches, a candle burning down. Wherever it lands it becomes the quiet center, the still dark point a room gathers toward.

This is not a piece made to look old. It is old. Four hundred years of South Indian hands and prayer and use, one of a kind, impossible to repeat. You are not buying a look. You are giving a very old, very beautiful thing its next hundred years.
