A cascade of light and cut crystal, gilded and hand-beaded, the kind of piece a room organizes itself around.

Eighteen candelabra lights rise in two glowing tiers from a frame of aged gilt metal, every arm wrapped in tiny beaded crystal so the whole structure seems spun from light rather than built from iron. Cut-glass bobeche cups catch each flame-tip bulb. Faceted rock-crystal drops and long strands of hand-strung beads fall in soft curtains from the crown, and a fluted glass ball finial tops the piece. Lit, it does not simply illuminate. It scatters warmth across the ceiling and throws slow, shivering points of light down the walls.

Hang it low over a round table and let dinner run long, the crystals warming as the candles burn down. Hang it in an entry and let it be the first thing that greets you and the last thing that holds the evening. This is an antique, and it wears its years beautifully.
