Some shapes have been around long enough to stop performing. The Chesterfield is one of them, and this is Restoration Hardware's Kensington, wrapped in Belgian linen the color of raw oats.

The tufting runs deep across the back and out over both rolled arms, every button drawn into a dimple that holds a small shadow. The linen is slubby and honest. Run your hand across it and you feel the weave rather than a finish. Two loose cushions sit low and give easily, so the piece reads soft where a Chesterfield usually reads formal.

Below the seat, a tufted rail with a single row of buttons, and short turned legs on brass casters. It rolls, which matters in a New York apartment.

One thing to know before you buy it. There is a 3" tear in the linen on the outside back panel, the side that faces the wall in most rooms. It is a clean slit rather than a spreading rip, the weave around it is intact, and an upholsterer can close it in an afternoon if you would rather it were gone. The last photo shows it up close. We have priced the piece with it in mind.

In your room it does the quiet work. Pale enough to lift a dark wall, structured enough to hold a corner on its own.

Care
