The Gilded Slip Mirror
A narrow slip of worn gold, eight inches across and forty-one tall. The mirror for the wall you thought was too skinny to hold anything.
The frame is giltwood, a flat outer band stepping down to a single rounded bead that runs the whole perimeter and carries the curve of the arch without a break. No carving, no crest, no ornament at all. Just the profile and the light on it. The gold is original and worn, darkened in patches, rubbed through at the high points where a century of hands and cloths have passed over it, the red bole showing warm underneath. Fine crackle in the gesso, the way old leaf goes when it has been left alone. It is not bright. It is not new. That is the whole appeal.
It goes where a normal mirror will not. The strip of wall between two doorways, the run beside a basin, the narrow pier at the end of a hall, the space beside a bed where a full frame would crowd. Picture your mornings here, catching yourself on the way past, the light climbing the gold as the day turns. Hung alone it reads almost like a piece of art, a tall thin column of soft reflection that makes a small wall feel like it has height.
Antique, one of a kind, with the wear that comes of being genuinely old rather than made to look it. It will settle into your wall like it has been waiting there.
