West African Hunter's Protective Tunic with Ritual Amulets — 20th Century

This beautiful African Armor brings ancient feelings to your space while adding depth and magic. Hang this item on the wall of your home to add ritual and wonder to your space.

A densely woven panel of coarse, dark brown fiber, almost pelt-like up close, fitted with a rope loop at the top and ready to hang straight out of the box. Its entire surface, front and back, is covered edge to edge in small objects tied on with cord and leather: curved animal horns, bone fragments, woven cowrie-style fringe, small hand-woven fans, carved wooden toggles, leather pouches, metal blade fragments, seed pods, and feathered tufts. Nothing repeats and nothing lines up. Every object hangs at its own angle and its own length, so the piece has real depth and movement rather than sitting flat, more a field of charms than a textile.

This style of shirt was worn by Bamum tribal hunters in the Grasslands of Cameroon for protection in the forest, from wild animals and from dangerous spirits. Embellished on both sides with teeth, claws, shells, horns, mirrors, carved wood masks, and leather pouches holding small verses from the Koran, it formed a hunter's own "spiritual armor," each one unique to the man who built it over his lifetime.
