The Olive Cameo Sofa
Some sofas hold a wall. This one gathers around you. The back rises into a high, sweeping cameo dome and curves down through the arms in a single unbroken line, the kind of shape that makes sitting feel like being gathered in.
It wears a soft olive chenille, green deepening where the light lands and settling to a cool grey-green in the shade. The frame is carved walnut show-wood, dark and hand-worked: a slim crest tracing the top of the curve, scrolled volutes at the arms, and fluted turned legs that lift the whole form on small carved feet. One long seat cushion runs the width, deep and welted.
The shape is a canapé en corbeille, a French form from the Louis XVI era. Corbeille means basket, the name earned by that wraparound back that encloses whoever sits in it. This one carries the lineage in its bones, the carved crest and fluted legs straight from the period, the olive chenille bringing it into a calmer present. Beautiful centered on a long wall, beneath a large canvas, or floated in a room where its curve can be seen from behind. A sofa for being held, for long evenings and longer conversations.
