Small and quietly grand, the way a good little table always is. Round-topped, on legs turned as fine as candlesticks, with a century of white paint worn back to bare wood.

The top is the whole story. Old paint has softened and flaked away over the years until the grain reads through it, a crackled map of ivory and warm wood that no one could fake and no two inches repeat. Run your hand across it and you feel the history, smooth in the worn places, faintly ridged where the paint still holds. The edge is reeded, the four legs slender and fluted, joined low by a delicate X-stretcher that meets in a small turned finial. Chalky pale paint clings to the base, rubbed back to bare wood at the feet where a hundred years of rooms have brushed past.

It asks for almost nothing and gives back a lot. Set it beside a chair for your book and your evening glass, in an entry for your keys and a low lamp, at the bedside for a candle and whatever you are reading now. Picture your mornings here, coffee cooling while the light moves across the worn top. It is little, so it slips in anywhere, and it is old, so it belongs the moment it arrives.

A one-of-a-kind piece, found and kept for its imperfect beauty. Once it is gone, it is gone. It settles into a room like it has always been there.
