Long and low, in black lacquer worn soft with age. A console that carries history in every rubbed edge and gilded curve.

The form is spare and architectural, a shallow rectangular coffer set on shaped bracket feet, its scale making it as much a piece of art as it is furniture. Across the front, dense hand-carved panels open into pierced gold-leafed relief: peaches and pomegranates, a bird caught mid-flight, bamboo rising in a tangle of leaves, a vase full of blossoms. At the center, a pair of doors closes under a brass hasp strung with three vase-shaped drop pulls, its sliding pin lock original to the piece. The black lacquer has worn through in places to a warm red-brown beneath, the true mark of age rather than anything applied for effect.

Set it beneath a mirror, along a hallway, or low against a bedroom wall. Use the drawers and doors for what they were built to hold. Let a single object rest on its long top, or leave it bare and let the carving do the talking. Either way, your room settles around it.
