ABC Carpet and Home Low Panel-Arm Sofa

A sofa that sits low and stays quiet. Nearly seven and a half feet of it, and only twenty-eight inches tall.

The arms are the whole story. Thin flat panels standing straight up, their top edges rolled soft and sloping gently toward the front, each traced with a fine welt seam. They sit level with the back, so the frame reads as one continuous low rail running around the seat instead of a wall you lean against. Nothing rises up to box you in. The proportions do the opposite of what most sofas do, and a room feels wider with it in there.

The seat is a single unbroken bench cushion, twenty-nine inches deep, low enough at sixteen and a half that you sink rather than perch. The upholstery is a heathered chenille in a soft dusty rose, an antique pink faded most of the way down into greige. Quiet, barely there. In flat light it reads nearly neutral. Where the light rakes across it the rose comes up. Up close the weave is finely ribbed and quietly variegated, two tones spun together, so the surface never goes flat. Under your hand it is dense, cool for a moment, then warm. Low dark block feet hold the whole thing just off the floor.

Picture your evenings here. The back pillows are loose and yours to arrange, piled at one arm for reading or pushed aside entirely when you want the full length of it. A blanket over your legs, a book face down on your chest, the light moving slowly along the seat. This is a sofa you lie down on, not one you sit up straight in.

The low slim arms make it generous with a room. Give it a low table, nothing taller than the seat, and let the space stay quiet around it. Against a long wall it stretches out. Floating in the middle of a room, the low back keeps sight lines open all the way across.
